Five Rivers Retreat is a great base for day trips throughout Fiordland and the Southern Lakes region – and you know you can return to a peaceful and relaxing place after a busy day exploring.

We highly recommend a day trip to Doubtful Sound while staying at Five Rivers Retreat.  You can enjoy a delicious cooked breakfast, then take a one hour scenic drive to Manapouri.  You then take a boat trip across Lake Manapouri, followed by a bus journey over the rugged Wilmot Pass before arriving at Deep Cove where you then get to cruise the amazing Doubtful Sound.   All you have to do is sit back and relax for the day enjoying the most amazing scenery.  Depending on which trip you opt for, you may also get the opportunity to visit the Underground Power Station.  Once back at Manapouri you have the option of returning to Five Rivers Retreat for an evening meal or dining out in Te Anau.

Another iconic tourist attraction close to Five Rivers Retreat is The Kingston Flyer steam train. Unfortunately the train is not currently running but you can still drive into Kingston and view this great train. Well worth a visit.

Fiordland and the Southern Lakes region are at the doorstep – it’s only an hours drive in either direction to Te Anau or Queenstown. Both places are well known for their spectacular scenery, adventure activities (including jet boating and boat cruises), and world famous tramping tracks. There’s also great shopping, and opportunities to sample local cuisine at restaurants and cafes.  Check out some other attractions below that you may want to enjoy while staying at Five Rivers Retreat.
