Fly Fishing

Five Rivers Retreat is located in the heart of Southland’s best brown trout fishing rivers and streams.

The region is known for its clear and pristine waterways set in delightful willow lined rural backdrops.
Staying at Five Rivers Retreat gives the angler endless opportunities to explore and fish, from nymphing mayfly imitations on the Mataura River to fishing terrestrial patterns such as blowfly or cicada to large trophy browns on the Upper Oreti River.

Being centrally located between the following great fishing rivers means you are not that far away at any time from reaching a river and casting a line:

All rivers are easily accessible to anglers. Fish and Game produce brochures which we can supply you with, these clearly show all access points available to anglers. We can also advise other access options which we have negotiated with local land owners.

The Fishing Season locally begins on 1st October  and ends on the 30th April.   All anglers must purchase a New Zealand Fishing Licence, you have the option of a daily licence or a season licence.  Licences can be purchased locally or online at Fish & Game New Zealand.

Roger has a keen interest in fly fishing and is very familiar with the Northern Southland fishing rivers.
However, professional experienced fishing guides are available locally and we recommend you consider a guide
for at least one day.  This ensures you have an amazing day out on the river.  Their local knowledge and wealth
of experience is invaluable especially if you are not familiar with sight fishing.

We suggest you try one of the  guides listed below – all are members of the New Zealand Professional Fishing Guides Association (NZPFGA).
The guides work independently but let us know if you wish us to book one for you.
